Joe Perkins is a chemist and engineer at CSIRO who specialises in the characterisation of materials across the mining value chain, including the assessment of wastes and emissions such as tailings and dust. His research focuses on applying microscopy and advanced laser systems to enable rapid and automated materials characterisation. Joe currently leads several CSIRO projects aimed at accurately determining the composition of dust particles, helping to better inform mining impacts and operational practices. He also oversees CSIRO’s In-situ Resource Analytics Team, which develops novel sensor technologies for a wide range of industrial applications.
