21st Century Air Quality: Global Progress and Challenges
Details
Air Pollution is one of the most significant global issues affecting both human health and well being and the environment. Its sources and impacts are multifaceted contributing to climate change, reductions in agricultural productivity and biodiversity with a global estimate of 8.1 million premature deaths annually attributed to air pollution. The WHO estimates that 99% of the worlds population are living in areas which exceed WHO air pollutant guidelines. The major pollutants of concern are predominantly PM2.5 and ozone with the burden felt by vulnerable populations in low and middle income countries. While many countries have made good progress there is much more needed to address sources. UN resolutions address both transboundary air pollution and local air pollution, with solutions available. However implementation is lacking with issues for low and middle income countries needing technical capacity, finance and fit for purpose governance.

Biography
Dr Andrea Hinwood is the former Chief Scientist and Director of the Office of Science of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). She served on the UN Secretary General’s Science Advisory Board, an observer on the Climate and Clean Air Coalition Science Advisory Panel and the International Methane Observatory (IMEO) Science Oversight Committee. She was the inaugural Chief Scientist of EPA Victoria and has an academic background in environmental exposures to pollutants and impacts on human health including air pollution. Dr. Hinwood earned her PhD in environmental epidemiology from Monash University in Melbourne and was previously Head of School and Associate Professor at the School of Natural Sciences Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. She has held appointments as a member and Deputy Chair of the Environmental Protection Authority of Western Australia and sessional member of the State Administrative Tribunal of Western Australia. Dr. Hinwood's career has included the provision of strategic advice to the governments on a wide variety of environmental matters.
